Alkyl Halides
why dry gaseous HCL is used in the prepartion of alkyl halides from alkenes?

I am not an organic chemist but my best educated guess is that you don't want the alcohol to form; i.e., the water present in wet HCl would hydrate the double bond forming an alcohol.
