Which of the following sentences is punctuated correctly?

A. A carpenter must use certain tools, hammers, saws, chisels, to finish a job.
B. A carpenter must use certain tools hammers, saws, chisels -to finish a job.
C. A carpenter must use certain tools - hammers, saws, chisels to finish a job.
D. A carpenter must use certain tools- hammers, saws, chisels- to finish a job •language - mandi, Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 7:41pm
I think it would be D because my using two dashes we separate the unwanted information and the sentence can still make sense with the info contained within the dashes.

Correct me Ms. Sue if I'm wrong please.

D is correct.

The correct answer is D. A carpenter must use certain tools- hammers, saws, chisels- to finish a job.

In this sentence, the punctuation is correct because the two dashes correctly separate the unwanted information (hammers, saws, chisels) from the rest of the sentence. The dashes are used to set off the non-essential information.

To determine the correct answer, you need to understand the rules for using punctuation marks, specifically commas and dashes in this case. When listing items in a sentence, commas are typically used to separate each item. However, when there are adjectives or descriptive phrases in the sentence that are essential to the meaning of the sentence, we do not use commas. In this case, the tools themselves (hammers, saws, chisels) are essential to the meaning of the sentence, so we do not use commas to separate them. Instead, we use dashes to set them off as non-essential information.

By following these punctuation rules and understanding the purpose of commas and dashes, you can determine that the correct answer is D.
