I'm writing an essay about poetry. My thesis is how literal language used in poetry create more still and concrete image, while poetry that uses figurative language proves more feeling. I just have no idea how to start my introductory paragraph. What do I first say in the beginning, how do i do this?

Write the body of the essay first. Be sure the points in your essay support your thesis.

Then, write the introduction, starting with an interest-provoking first sentence and ending with your thesis statement.

Begin the introduction about your topic, then within your paragraph tell what your going to include in the others. The first sentence should tell what your doing with some kind of excitement that will make the reader want to read more.

To start your introductory paragraph, you should provide a brief overview of the topic of poetry and its purpose. This will help set the context for your thesis and the direction of your essay. Here is a suggested structure for your introductory paragraph:

1. Start with a general statement about the importance and popularity of poetry throughout history. For example: "Poetry has been an integral part of human expression for centuries, capturing emotions, experiences, and ideas in a unique and artistic manner."

2. Provide a definition or explanation of poetry that highlights its significance as a form of communication. You can mention that it often diverges from everyday language, utilizing distinct choices in words and stylistic techniques.

3. Introduce your thesis statement, which should succinctly convey your argument about the contrasting effects of literal and figurative language in poetry. For example: "In the realm of poetic language, the use of literal expressions creates vivid, concrete images, while figurative language evokes deeper emotions and imbues the verses with layered meanings."

Remember, the purpose of an introductory paragraph is to capture your readers' attention, provide them with an overview of your topic, and clearly present your thesis. By following this structure, you can smoothly lead your readers into your essay's main argument.
