jimm, "off the record" does not necessarily mean the reporter can't use that information to track down additional information or another source that can be quoted. Sometimes "off the record" interviews or sources are meant to lead the reporter to look into something he/she may not otherwise be aware of, but the "off the record" source does not want to be quoted as a source because of fear of retribution by "higher ups." The answer to this question above is misleading and incomplete, but you should know this anyway.
