34) La semana pasada yo ____ la cuenta cuando Maribel, Itzel, Juan
Carlos y yo salimos a un restaurante.

I'll send this to our Spanish expert, SraJMcGin.

Let's begin with those verbs, which will have a spelling change.

buscar
llegar
comenzar

A -car verb must change the c to a q when followed by the letter "e" to keep the "k" sound and that will occur in the "yo" form of the Preterit and the Present Subjunctive (when you get to it1)
This is the "s" sound = ce, ci
This is the "k" sound = ca, co, cu, que, qui

A -gar verb which has the hard "guh" sound must add a "u" in front of the letter "e" and that will happen in the "yo" form of the Preterit and the Present Subjunctive, when you get to it.
guh sound = ga, go, gu, gue, gui
"h" sound = ge, gi

A -zar verb will have no sound change if you are studying Latin American Spanish but it will change the sound in Castellian. The "z" will become the letter "c" to keep the "th" sound in Spain.
"th" = za, zo, zu, ce, ci

Now, we don't DO the sentences for you, but I'll flag this and come back later after you have written the verb forms for the above sentences.

Sra

To understand what is special about the verbs ending in -car, -gar, and -zar, let's break it down:

Verbs ending in -car, such as "buscar," have a spelling change in the first person singular (yo form) of the preterite tense. The -c changes to -qu.

For example:
buscar (to search) -> yo busqué (I searched)

Verbs ending in -gar, such as "pagar," have a spelling change in the first person singular (yo form) of the preterite tense. The -g changes to -gu.

For example:
pagar (to pay) -> yo pagué (I paid)

Verbs ending in -zar, such as "empezar," have a spelling change in the first person singular (yo form) of the preterite tense. The -z changes to -c.

For example:
empezar (to start) -> yo empecé (I started)

Now, let's complete the sentences with the correct preterite form of the logical verb from the word bank:

26) El viernes pasado yo ____ en la cafetería de la universidad con mi mejor amigo David.
Based on the explanation above, the verb that ends in -zar is "empezar." The preterite form for "yo" is "empecé." Therefore, the sentence would be:
El viernes pasado yo empecé en la cafetería de la universidad con mi mejor amigo David.

27) Yo ____ a estudiar aquí en el año 2010.
Based on the explanation above, the verb that ends in -gar is "llegar." The preterite form for "yo" is "llegué." Therefore, the sentence would be:
Yo llegué a estudiar aquí en el año 2010.

33) Yo le ____ las instrucciones a mi compañero pero él no las entendió.
Based on the explanation above, the verb that ends in -car is "explicar." The preterite form for "yo" is "expliqué." Therefore, the sentence would be:
Yo le expliqué las instrucciones a mi compañero pero él no las entendió.

34) La semana pasada yo ____ la cuenta cuando Maribel, Itzel, Juan Carlos y yo salimos a un restaurante.
Based on the explanation above, the verb that ends in -car is "tocar." The preterite form for "yo" is "toqué." Therefore, the sentence would be:
La semana pasada yo toqué la cuenta cuando Maribel, Itzel, Juan Carlos y yo salimos a un restaurante.
