Packaging Tangerines

The produce manager at the grocery store had 410 tangerines. He put some of them into 15 cartons containing 12 tangerines each. He then put the rest into 14 cartons, each containing the same number of tangerines.

How many tangerines were in each of the 14 cartons? Explain how you got the answer.

b. How many tangerines were left?

There are two qustions.

15 * 12 = 180

14(410 - 180) = ?

That wont work becuase there is only 410 tangerines.

Sorry -- but I made a major mistake. The second equation should be:

(410 - 180) / 14 = ?

230 / 14 does not come out even

It doesn't come out even, but you can round to get your answer. So, 16.428571428571428571428571428571 would round to 16.

I hope this helps! :)

It doesn't, does it?

The remainder of this problem is the number of tangerines that were left.

To find the number of tangerines in each of the 14 cartons, we can subtract the number of tangerines already placed in the 15 cartons from the total number of tangerines.

We know that the produce manager placed 15 cartons containing 12 tangerines each, which gives a total of 15 * 12 = 180 tangerines.

To find the number of tangerines in the 14 remaining cartons, we subtract this from the total number of tangerines given, which is 410.

So, 410 - 180 = 230 tangerines.

To find the number of tangerines in each of the 14 cartons, we divide the total number of tangerines in the remaining cartons by the number of cartons:

230 / 14 = 16.4285714

Since we can't have a fraction of a tangerine, we round down to the nearest whole number. Therefore, there were 16 tangerines in each of the 14 cartons.

b. To find how many tangerines were left, we can subtract the total number of tangerines placed in the cartons (180) from the total number of tangerines given (410):

410 - 180 = 230 tangerines were left.
