(I just need 2 writer ideas)

In the middle of the 19th century, political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville claimed,

"The inhabitants of the United States have...properly speaking, no literature."

In other words, de Tocqueville believed that America’s literature was not “worthy literature” unique the country.

-Based on what you learned this semester, is this statement accurate?
-Evaluate the contributions of two or more writers in this semester to the development of uniquely American literature.
-What genres, subjects, themes, settings, or characters did these writers develop? (25 points)

Some of my favorites:

Henry David Thoreau
Thomas Jefferson
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Edgar Allen Poe

Im confused as to what two American writers i should form the essay around.

Phillis Wheatly is also fascinating -- her background AND her writing.

Thank you so much!

Im going to base the essay on Edgar Allen Poe as well as Phillis Wheatly.

Excellent choices! =)

As long as none of this ends up on our final exam you can continue to ask all the questions you want.

Thank you!

Your teachers!

yes, Anne was born in England and was an early American colonist who was the first female writer in the American colonies to publish their works.

In the list at the left are many authors to choose from. I'd choose Anne Bradstreet, for one. What do you think?

Writeacher, how would Anne Bradstreet work? Wasn't she born in England?
