I'm a high school senior and I'm planning on applying to SBU. I have a 4.0 gpa, a 1690 on the SAT(am going to retake), a 24 on the ACT, took 3 AP classes and am currently taking 2 more, part of National Honor Society, in the top 5% of my school, have an advanced regents diploma, have taken honors classes since 9th grade, and did 150+ hours of community service. Do you think I have a chance of getting accepted regular decision? Thank you!

Which college is SBU?

Sorry, Stony Brook University

Your grades and scores are great. However, SBU only accepts about 40 percent of its applicants.

Good luck!

When you say 1690 on the SAT, how is that divided up? What was your score ...

... on the math section?
... on the reading section?
... on the writing section?

Thank you!

My math score was 570

Writing 570
Reading 550

So ... pretty much even.

There are some schools that place more emphasis on the math and reading than the writing. You should check out Stonybrook's website and see what they say in their admisssions section. Check both the incoming freshman requirements AND the transfer student requirements, even though you're not transferring. It'll give you an idea if they consider the 3 scores evenly or if they emphasize 2.

I checked and it said they accept scores between 1660 and 1980, so I don't think they really look at writing. And for the transfer students they don't look at sat or act scores

Your three scores total 1690.

Make sure you have a really good personal essay ... what sets you apart ... why you would be an excellent addition to their student body ...

What other schools are you applying to?

I did my personal essay but I'm not sure if that's the one I'll be submitting. I might rewrite it. I'm applying to city college, hunter, university at buffalo, pace university, binghamton university, le moyne college, st.john's university, and hofstra university
