Hypothesis gives you a basis from which to proceed with scientific investigation. It is basically the guess/idea that you are trying to test... IE I hypothesize that painting a plant with black paint will cause it to die... then you go on to test whether painting a leaf with black paint will cause it to die by conducting an experiment and recording the results.
