need help with this problem of reasoning quantitively. simplify
(-2)to the 3rd power -2 to the 5th power
((-2)^3) - (2^5)=
-2^3 is -8
2^5 is 32
-8 - 32 = ? - I think you'll be able to do the rest, so what is the final answer?
I hope this helps! :)
24? when u have 2 negatives it's a positive.
thanks Brody
-8 - 32 = -40
I got my answer off of the Google calculator and my computer calculator.
In order to get 24, you would have -8 - -32 = 24. In this case, it's not.
You are mistakenly subtracting a negative from a negative. I know that when a negative number is subtracting a negative number, it equals a positive.
In this case you aren't subtracting a negative from a negative. You are doing a negative subtracted by a positive. Therefore, the answer is -40 and not 24.
I hope this helps you understand, and you're welcome!:)
Thx Brady. Sorry took me long to respond. But I worked it out. I got what you were saying. had a mixup with my signs!
You're welcome Zion! I am glad that you figured it out, and I am glad you understand how to do it. :)
To simplify the expression (-2)^3 - 2^5, we can start by simplifying each term separately and then subtracting them.
Let's start with (-2)^3. This means we take -2 and raise it to the power of 3. To do this, we multiply -2 by itself three times: (-2) × (-2) × (-2).
The negative signs can be confusing, so let's break it down step by step:
(-2) × (-2) = 4 (multiplying two negatives gives a positive)
4 × (-2) = -8 (multiplying a positive by a negative gives a negative)
So (-2)^3 simplifies to -8.
Now let's simplify 2^5. This means we take 2 and raise it to the power of 5. To do this, we multiply 2 by itself five times: 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2.
2 × 2 = 4
4 × 2 = 8
8 × 2 = 16
16 × 2 = 32
So 2^5 simplifies to 32.
Now that we have simplified both terms, we can subtract them: -8 - 32.
When we subtract a negative number, it is the same as adding its positive counterpart. So -8 - 32 is the same as -8 + (-32).
-8 + (-32) = -40
Therefore, (-2)^3 - 2^5 simplifies to -40.
