y = -16(x^2 - 2x)

= -16(x^2 - 2x + 1 - 1)

= -16( (x-1)^2 - 1)

= -16(x-1)^2 + 16

so the vertex is (1,16)

suggesting that the max height is 16 after 1 second

so it takes 1 second to up and 1 second to come back down, for a total of 2 seconds for the ball to hit the ground again.
