Work or no work?

Work=ForcexDistance

1. A person holding a box of potatoes. No work
2. A batter holds his bat at his side while waiting for his turn to play. No work
3. Your sister carries home her books from school. No work
4. You push a box from point A to point B along the floor. Work
5. Your brother pulls the family dog along the sidewalk as he attempts to take it on a walk.Work
6.You pick up your notebook off the floor from under the desk. Work
7. You carry your notebook to your appropriate cabinet as you put it correctly away.
No work

With the books and notebook, aren't they being moved?

To determine whether work is being done or not, you can use the formula:

Work = Force × Distance

If there is a force applied and there is a displacement of an object, then work is being done.

Let's analyze each situation:

1. A person holding a box of potatoes. No work:
In this scenario, the person is holding the box but not moving it. Since there is no displacement, no work is being done.

2. A batter holds his bat at his side while waiting for his turn to play. No work:
Similarly, in this situation, the batter is not exerting any force nor is there any displacement, so no work is being done.

3. Your sister carries home her books from school. No work:
If your sister carries her books without lifting or moving them, then no work is being done. However, if she lifts the books or moves them horizontally, work is being done.

4. You push a box from point A to point B along the floor. Work:
Here, you are exerting a force by pushing the box, and there is a displacement of the box from point A to point B. Therefore, work is being done.

5. Your brother pulls the family dog along the sidewalk as he attempts to take it on a walk. Work:
In this situation, your brother is exerting a force to move the dog along the sidewalk. There is a displacement of the dog, so work is being done.

6. You pick up your notebook off the floor from under the desk. Work:
When you lift the notebook, you are applying an upward force, and there is displacement of the notebook from under the desk to your hand. Hence, work is being done.

7. You carry your notebook to your appropriate cabinet as you put it correctly away. No work:
If you are carrying the notebook without any vertical or horizontal displacement, then no work is being done. However, if you lift or move the notebook, work is being done.

Remember, work is only performed when there is a force applied in the direction of displacement. If there is no force or no displacement, then no work is being done.
