2) The length of a rectangle is 9 m longer than its width and the area of the rectangle is 280 m2. Find the exact dimensions of the rectangle.

3) The first leg of a right triangle is 3 cm longer than its second leg. If the hypotenuse has a length of 8 cm, find the exact lengths of the two legs

**Steve**, Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 12:09amif the legs are x and the hypotenuse is h, then

h^2 = x^2+x^2

(x+8)^2 = 2x^2

x^2+16x+64 = 2x^2

x^2 - 16x - 64 = 0

Now just use the quadratic formula

If the width is w, then

w(w+9) = 280

If the shorter leg is x, then

x^2 + (x+3)^2 = 8^2
