Endotoxin refers specifically to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. LPS is composed of three parts: lipid A, core oligosaccharide, and O antigen. Among these components, the lipid A portion of LPS is responsible for the toxic properties of endotoxin.
