How do I break these down to find out which one is the largest without using a calculator their fraction.

a. 13,579 + 1/2468

b. 13,579 - 1/2468

c. 13,579 * 1/2468

d. 13,579/
2468

a is bigger than b and bigger than 13,579 because of the + sign

c and d are smaller than 13,579 because 13,579 is divided by something bigger than 1

Thanks Damon have a great Sunday

well Damon I did it over and I think that D is the largest not a. because even though you're adding D answer comes out bigger.

I have a feeling that you should have had brackets around the top to have

(13579 + 1)/2468
(13579 - 1)/2468
(13579 * 1)/2468
(13579)/2468

in every case we divide by 2468 , so the largest answer is obtained when the numerator is the largest.

so clearly A is the correct answer.

Hey Reiny

Thanks for your respond, Damon you and Reiny are on the same track. I'll keeping working on this,. I think I keep missing something. Thanks

To compare the given expressions and determine the largest one without using a calculator, we can break down each expression and simplify them if possible. Here's how:

a. 13,579 + 1/2468:
To simplify this expression, you need to find a common denominator for the addition operation. In this case, the common denominator would be 2468 since it is a factor of itself. So, you can rewrite the expression as follows:
13,579 * 1/1 + 1/2468 = (13,579 * 2468 + 1) / 2468

b. 13,579 - 1/2468:
Similarly, to simplify this expression, you need to find a common denominator for the subtraction operation. Again, the common denominator would be 2468. So, you can rewrite the expression as follows:
13,579 * 1/1 - 1/2468 = (13,579 * 2468 - 1) / 2468

c. 13,579 * 1/2468:
This expression involves multiplication, and it's already simplified. So there's no need for further breakdown.

d. 13,579 / 2468:
To simplify this expression, you should perform the division operation:
13,579 / 2468 = 5.5 (approximately)

Now that you have simplified each expression, you can compare them to determine the largest one. Using the simplified forms, you can compare the numerators of each fraction or the whole number part of each expression.

For example, comparing the simplified expressions:

a. (13,579 * 2468 + 1) / 2468
b. (13,579 * 2468 - 1) / 2468
c. 13,579 * 1/2468
d. 5.5

You can see that option d (5.5) is the largest because it is the highest numerical value among the simplified expressions.
