Shirley and Amy painted faces at the fair for an hr. sixteen children had their faces painted. Shirley was able to paint 3 times as many faces as Amy. How many faces did each girl paint?

Let x = the number faces that Amy painted.

x + 3x = 16

4x = 16

x = 4
