Class, this week your individual assignment is to write a paper on Technology and Communication. Your essay should be between 1,050- to 1,750-words and should explain how technology has affected the communication capabilities of specialized databases in the criminal justice system. One of your required readings for the week, Report of the National Task Force on Court Automation and Integration, has an extensive write up on how technology has impacted communication within the criminal justice system. Be sure to review this document, and use it as appropriate as a reference in your paper. Additionally, Chapter 13 of your course readings has a discussion of the different types of specialized databases that exist. Be sure that your paper makes mention of one (or more) of the following:
1) Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)
2) Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)
3) National Crime Information Center (NCIC)
4) National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)
5) National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN)
Finally, your essay should discuss the overall positive effect of communication due to new technologies; the overall negative effect of communication due to new technologies; and a discussion about which new specialized technologies you might want to use and why
This assignment gives you an opportunity to provide your own analysis of what you think about how technology has impacted communication in the criminal justice system. In addition to covering the concepts and topics of the week, please be sure to also provide your own thoughts and analysis in your essay.
