an interval is a section of the number line.
The interval [5,6] is all nmbers between 5 and 6, including the ends. That's a closed interval.
An open interval does not include the ends, and is written with parentheses instead of brackets.
(5,7) is all numbers greater than 5 and less than 7.
An interval may also be half-open, if it includes only one endpoint.
[3,8) is all numbers x such that 3 <= x < 8
