**Reiny**, Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 4:58pm1. What you probably meant was

2x/(5y) = 6

then 2x = 30y

y = 2x/30 = x/15

2. Again, without brackets, we could assume you meant

11/(4-a) = 3

but I will take you at face value and do it according to the order of operation.

11/4 - a = 3

11/4 - 3 = a

a = 11/4 - 12/4

a = -1/4

using 11/(4-a) = 3

11 = 12 - 3a

3a = 1

a = 1/3

Can you see how critical brackets are when typing on here?
