A rectangular writing pd is 5/6ft long by 1/2ft wide. A border is to be added round all sides of the writing pad. Use the formula P=2L + 2W to determine the length of the border.

  I will assume the border is of uniform width
  
  including the border:
  length = 5.6 + 2x
  width = 1/2 + 2x
  
  perimeter = 2(5/6+2x) + 2(1/2 + 2x)
  = 5/3 + 4x + 1 + 4x
  = 8x + 8/3
