**Corie**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:10amthanks Dylan. but howd you get that?

- Proportions -
**Reiny**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:11amfor any proportion, you can cross-multipy, that is

(3y-8)(5) = (12)(y)

15y - 40 = 12y

15y-12y = 40

3y = 40

y = 40/3 or 13 1/3

**Corie**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:12amok im gonna go with Reiny's answer. thanks for breaking it down so I could see how you got the answer :)

**Reiny**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:17amYou can always check any answer by simply subbing the answer back in the original equation, and use your calculator to compare the left side and the right side of the original equation.

Dylan's answer does not work.

**Dylan**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:22amIt just depends on how the problem is actually written.

Is 3y-8 all over 12 or is 8 just over 12?

Because I solved 3y - (8/12) = (y/5), not [(3y-8)/12]= (y/5)...its just all in how you type your question.

**Reiny**, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:46amI assumed that Corie skipped the brackets, and he meant (3y-8)/12.

The fact that is was called a "proportion" gave me that clue.

**Joanna**, Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 7:06pmthere were no brackets it was just written out as this well on mine it was.

3y-8/12=y/5

if anyone can help me id gladly appreciate it thankz
