During the first stage of cellular respiration, called glycolysis, glucose is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate and a small amount of ATP is produced. In the second stage, pyruvate enters the mitochondria where it is further broken down in a series of reactions called the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain, resulting in the production of a large amount of ATP.
