In 2011, the population of the United States was about 3.12 x 108. The population of the Japan was about 1.27 x 108. About how much more was the population of the United States than Japan?

a) 1.85 x 108
b) 1.85 x 1016
c) 1.85 x 1064

3.12 x 108 + 1.27 x 108

Do have to multiply, add, subtract, or divide??? I pick to add.

3.12 x 108 + 1.27 x 108

more than indicates a difference, so subtract.
3.12-1.27 = 1.85

you should have noticed that your answer was not one of the choices, so maybe some rethinking was in order.

If I ask how much bigger 10 is than 6, would you add 10+6?
