Before the telegraph, all message had to go by snail mail -- which often took weeks to cross the country.
After the telegraph, messages could be sent much more quickly. Until fairly recently, long distance phone calls were quite expensive -- especially for long distances. When I was living in Chicago in 1952, my great grandmother died in California. The family there sent a telegram to my mom to tell her of the death.
