You need to form two equations. Since Frank's ticket is 1/2 that of his wife's, I wrote the first equation as F = 1/2W or W = 2F. Then I wrote my second equation as wife's ticket plus Frank's ticket are equal to \$294. In other words W + F = \$294. Then I combined the two equations substituting the first in the second I got 2F + F = \$294. I substituted 2F for W so 3F = \$294 and F = \$98. Frank's ticket costs was \$98 while his wife's ticket was \$196.
