My denominator is 5 more than my numerator.I am equal to 27/72

numerator --- x

denominator -- x+5

x/(x+5) = 27/72
72x = 27x + 135
45x = 135
x = 3

fraction is 3/8 , which is what 27/72 is if reduced to lowest terms

How did we get 135 here? please explain?

thanks

are you not familiar with algebra?

I cross mulitplied
72(x) = 27(x+5)
72x = 27x + 135
etc

Thank You!

To solve this problem, let's assign variables to the numerator and denominator. Let's say the numerator is represented by the variable "x" and the denominator is represented by the variable "x + 5" since the denominator is 5 more than the numerator.

According to the problem, the fraction is equal to 27/72. We can set up an equation using the variables:

x / (x + 5) = 27/72

To get rid of the denominators, we can cross-multiply by multiplying both sides of the equation by (x + 5) and 72.

72 * x = 27 * (x + 5)

72x = 27x + 135

Next, we want to isolate the variable "x" on one side of the equation. Let's subtract 27x from both sides:

72x - 27x = 27x - 27x + 135

45x = 135

Now we can solve for "x" by dividing both sides of the equation by 45:

x = 135 / 45

Simplifying the division, we find that:

x = 3

Now we have found the value of the numerator, which is 3. To find the value of the denominator, we can substitute this value back into the expression "x + 5":

x + 5 = 3 + 5 = 8

Therefore, the numerator is 3 and the denominator is 8.
