**Steve**, Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 3:52pmfirst, get rid of the parens:

3(x-2)-9(x^2+7x+4)-5(x+8)

3x - 6 - 9x^2 - 63x - 36 - 5x - 40

Now collect like powers of x:

-9x^2 + (3-63-5)x + (-6-36-40)

-9x^2 - 65x - 82
