**Reiny**, Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 2:42pmcontainer with less water = x quarts

container with more water = y quarts

x + y = 35 or y = 35-x

after pouring:

container with less water = x-7

container with more water = y +7

y+7 = 4(x-7)

35-x + 7 = 4x - 28

-5x = -70

x = 14

the container with less water had 14 quarts

check:

original:

smaller --- 14

larger ----- 35-14 = 21

out-pouring:

smaller -- 7

larger -- 28

Is 28 4 times as much as 7 ?? , YES
