How come 9 is wrong? 5 goes into 31 6 times and there is 1 as the remainder so wouldn't it be 6.1?

No. You need to carry it out as a decimal.

With 1 as a remainder, you have the fraction of 1/5. That's 0.2. The answer is 6.2.

Most of us use a calculator for this type of problem.
