**Ms. Sue**, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 6:53pmI'll do the first one.

-1/9 + (-5/7) =

First, find the common denominator.

1/9 = 7/63

5/7 = 45/63

-7/63 + (-45/63) = -52/63

I'll be glad to check your answers for the other problems.

**Ms. Sue**, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 7:32pm1/9 = 7/63

I multiplied both the numerator and denominator by 7.

**Ms. Sue**, Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 8:23pmThe easiest way is to change these to improper fractions.

3 1/2 = 7/2

1 5/9 = 14/9

(7/2) / (14/9) =

(7/2) * (9/14) = 63/28 = 2.25

She can cut two pieces of ribbon from this length.
