-8 - 5y = 12 - 9y
-5y + 9y = 12 + 8
4y = 20
y = 5

You seem to be forgetting that multiplying two negative numbers produces a positive number. Watch your signs!
wait i think i got it:
8 - 3p -12 = 2p
12 + 8 = 20
20 - 3p = 2p
+3p = +3p
20 = 5p
