An F-14 jet fighter flies horizontally at 200m/s at an angle of 30 degrees above the horizon when it drops parcel from 2400m above the ground.
a) How long does it take the parcel to hit the ground?
b) How far does the parcel travel in the x-direction, from the time it is released until it contacts the ground?

  • physics -

    horizontal speed of fighter and parcel = 200 cos 30 forever = 173 m/s

    initial vertical speed of parcel = 200 sin 30 up = 100 m/s
    v = 100 - g t
    h = 2400 + 100 t - 4.9 t^2
    h = 0 at ground
    so
    4.9 t^2 - 100 t - 2400 = 0
    solve quadratic for t
    then
    x = 173 t
