Homework Help: adv comp

how can i put this sentence where I am not talking to the reader, just describing the surroundings.

As one starts to stride to the right,they come upon a small stream and can’t get past the reeking smell of unknown origins.

my whole paper is suppose to be like that. I am describing a forest but to describe different parts have to mention that I am moving to a different space but it is not suppose to be a story.

"one" and "they" do not match. Make them both singular or both plural.

Beyond that, I don't know what type of help you're asking for.
