**Steve**, Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 4:53pmevery two banks hold 100,000 pennies

so, 12 banks hold 600,000 pennies

13 banks hold 650,000

so, the 14th bank holds all pennies from 650,001-700,000

Or, just divide:

678230/50000 = 13.56

That means that it takes more than 13 banks, but less than 14. So, the 14th bank is the one that gets the penny in question.
