Is this sentence grammatically correct?

In the novel, Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, the character Dorian Gray conveys the idea that influence eventually forces people to become another person and make decisions that are aberrations.

I think you should use more straightforward words and phrase the sentence more simply. It sounds as if you're trying to impress someone by using big words! How can you rephrase in smoother English?
