Frankly, I think the case for independent bookstores is a lost cause. The chains offer good prices, excellent service, and huge selections. Even the large chains can't compete against each other -- so at least one of them has given up and gone under. Independent book sellers don't stand a chance -- except perhaps in very large markets.
