Homework Help: Debating - subsidies, the arts

Could anyone help me come up with some points as to subsidies for the arts benefit the individual (both in society and the individual artist), and how taking subsidies away from the arts sector would be detrimental to the individual?
Any help would be much appreciated :)

The arts have always been subsidized in civilized societies. Either government or rich individuals pay large parts of the expenses.
