From a point on a straight road, Nico and Maria are riding bicycles in the same direction. Nico rides at 12mph and Maria rides at 14mph. In how many hours will they be 11 mi apart?

Algebra! Not Alegra.

They will ride the same time of t hours

distance covered by Nico = 12t miles
distance covered by Maria = 14t mile

so we want
14t - 12t = 11
2t = 11
t = 11/2 or 5.5

it will take 5.5 hours for them to be 11 miles apart

or

each hour they travel the distance between will increase by 2 miles
so the time to be 11 miles apart is 11/2 or 5.5 hours

That was sooo much easier than I was making it out to be. Thank you!

you are welcome

To find out in how many hours Nico and Maria will be 11 miles apart, you can use the formula for distance: distance = speed × time.

Let's assume that t represents the amount of time (in hours) we want to find.

For Nico: distance = 12mph × t = 12t
For Maria: distance = 14mph × t = 14t

Since they are riding in the same direction, we can subtract their distances to find the total distance between them:
Total distance = 14t - 12t = 2t

We want the total distance to be 11 miles, so we can set up the equation:
2t = 11

Now, we can solve for t by dividing both sides of the equation by 2:
t = 11/2 = 5.5

Therefore, Nico and Maria will be 11 miles apart after 5.5 hours.
