the denominator of a rational number is greater than the numerator by 6. if the numerator is decreased by 2 and the denominator is increased by 4 . the rational is 1/5 .Find the rational number.

numerator  x
denominator  x+6
numerator decreased by 2  x2
denominator increased by 4  x+10
(x2)/(x+10) = 1/5
crossmultiply
5x  10 = x+10
4x = 20
x=5
original fraction was 5/11
check:
new fraction:
(52)/(11+4)
= 3/15
= 1/5
