In the middle of the sixteenth century, Antwerp was a crowded, lively city; some hundred thousand people lived there. Disease, Plague, and fire took their regular toll; yet boom conditions prevailed. New houses, shops, and guildhalls were constructed, and in 1542 the city walls were expanded at great cost. The main point of the passage is whats?
