August is the problem.
Marlena is understandably upset because her horse had to be killed. She's also sad that the horse meat had to be fed to the other animals. August shows no sympathy toward Marlena. In addition, he is impatient with the waitress in the restaurant. She's doing the best she can, but August yells at her.
The author shows August to be selfish and uncaring.
