(9 / 2 ) x - 8 = - 5.5 + 4 x Multiply both sides by 2
2 * ( 9 / 2 ) x - 2 * 8 = 2 * ( - 5.5 ) + 2 * 4 x
9 x - 16 = - 11 + 8 x Subtract 8 x to both sides
9 x - 16 - 8 x = - 11 + 8 x - 8 x
9 x - 8 x - 16 = - 11
x - 16 = - 11 Add 16 to both sides
x - 16 + 16 = - 11 + 16
x = 16 - 11 = 5
