If you think it's the soup and chowder, then change that verb to "are" -- plural subject/plural verb, remember!

The two things that need to be made parallel here are characteristics of the student -- make them "scrupulous" and "honest" <~~using those terms, not what's in the sentence as is, how will you revise this?

In the first half of this sentence, it's "children are..." but the second half is "[children] have..."
The point is to make the verbs parallel, and then the rest of the sentence after the verbs match each other.

6 is a smoother sentence without those words.
