Homework Help: calculus

A rancher wants to fence in an area of 3000000 square feet in a rectangular field and then divide it in half with a fence down the middle, parallel to one side.

Length of fence:______ feet

*obviously I'm bad at word problems but that's why I'm trying to work on them and need help figuring out the steps

you don't have enough information here.
the rectangle can be square or long and skinny. The long skinny field will need lots more fence than the square one.

And, if it's not square, does the extra fence down the middle cross the short way, or the long way? Makes a big difference.
