**Reiny**, Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:09pmhow about multiplying each term by 4x ?

x^2 - 20 = x

x^2 - x - 20 = 0

solve for,

an easy one, it factors

**Nikki**, Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:20pmWouldn't it be x^2-20=4 since (1/4)•4x= (4x/4)? So that means it would be x^2-24=0, right? Where would I go from there?

**Reiny**, Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:27pm...since (1/4)•4x= (4x/4)?

yup, and what is 4x/4 ?

isn't that x ?

so you know how to factor simple trinomials?

x^2 - x - 20 = 0

(x-5)(x+4) = 0

so x = 5 or x = -5

check:

if x = 5

5/4 - 5/5 = 5/4 - 1 = 1/4 , check!

if x = -4

-4/4 - 5/-4

= -1 + 5/4 = 1/4 , check!

my answers are correct

**Nikki**, Monday, April 16, 2012 at 8:44pmAy, my bad. Thanks :) and you mean x=5 or x=-4 right?

- Algebra -
**Reiny**, Monday, April 16, 2012 at 9:33pmright, x = 5 and x = -4,

my bad, lol
