If the word,"if," in math mean multiply and,"is," means equal, what does the word,"was'" mean???

EX: Four times a number was 22 greater than twice the number.

4x = 2x + 22 is what those words indicate. I don't think "if" necessarily means multiply.

I think that was a typo for "of", as in 20% of 50 is 10

As for "was" it usually arises when describing a quantity which has changed for some reason, as in

A was half as old as B 5 years ago. Now he's 10 years younger. How old are A and B?

In this context, the word "was" signifies the past tense of the verb "is," which typically means equal. However, in this case, "was" does not have a specific mathematical meaning. It is simply used to relate two quantities in the given sentence.

Let's break down the example sentence you provided: "Four times a number was 22 greater than twice the number."

To solve this problem mathematically, we can assign a variable to represent the unknown number. Let's call it "x."

The sentence can be translated into an equation as follows:
4 * x = 2 * x + 22

Here's how to interpret this equation:
- "Four times a number" is expressed as 4 * x.
- "Was 22 greater than twice the number" means that 4 times the number was equal to 22 more than twice the number, so it becomes 2 * x + 22.

To find the value of the unknown number (x), we can solve the equation:
4 * x = 2 * x + 22

By solving this equation, we can determine the value of x:

4x - 2x = 22
2x = 22
x = 11

So the number in this problem is 11.
