I am sure you meant to say
1/(x+2) + 1/(x+4) = 1
multiply by (x+2)(x+4)
x+4 + x+2 = x^2 + 6x + 8
x^2 + 4x + 2 = 0
x = (-4 ± √8)/2
= (-4 ± 2√2)/2
= -2 ± √2
