**MathMate**, Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 10:57pm8a+5s=12220

a+s=1970

Solve by elimination (of s)

Multiply the second equation by 5 and subtract from the first:

8a-5a + 5s-5s = 12220-5*1970

3a = 2370

a=790

Solve for s using a=790
