At the great hall of the Capulets Romeo sees Juliet from across the room, and asks a servingman who she is. The servingman does not know. Romeo is transfixed; Rosaline vanishes from his mind and he declares that he has never been in love until this moment. Moving through the crowd Romeo approaches Juliet and touches her hand. In a dialogue laced with religious metaphors that figure Juliet as a saint and Romeo as a pilgrim who wishes to erase his sin, he tries to convince her to kiss him, since it is only through her kiss that he might be absolved. Juliet agrees to remain still as Romeo kisses her. Thus, in the terms of their conversation, she takes his sin from him. Juliet then makes the logical leap that if she has taken Romeo’s sin from him, his sin must now reside in her lips, and so they must kiss again.

Try writing it out separately, as if it were just one poem, without the characters' names. You need to see it and read it and analyze it as a 14-line poem (sonnet).

A sonnet is a perfect, idealized poetic form often used to write about love.Romeo uses religious imagery to convey his feelings. The use of words such as "holy shrine, faith, pilgrims, sin, devotion" give a feeling of deep sincerity to his first talk with Juliet. Likewise she uses similar words and comparisons to convey her feelings. Their first conversation is written as a sonnet, this was a popular option at the time the play was penned. The young couple get together and stand palm to palm. The significance of this gesture is that pilgrims brought palm leaves back from the Holy Land and were subsequently known as "palmers." They use very strong poetic words in the conversation and are both obviously in love with the other. They use their palms as a symbol of their lips before they kiss, "For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch, and palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss"

he can be absolved. “to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss”. Juliet says Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this,
For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss meaning Good pilgrim, you don’t give your hand enough credit. By holding my hand you show polite devotion. After all, pilgrims touch the hands of statues of saints. Holding one palm against another is like a kiss.
