Total of 92 students in the school band. There are 16 more girls than boys in the band. How many girls are in the band?

Let x = the number of girls

x + x + 16 = 92

2x + 16 = 92

2x = 92 + 16

2x = 108

x = 54

But 54 and 16 doesnt equal 92

Ms Sue probably meant to say

let x = the number of boys
then x+16 is the number of girls

x + x+16 = 92
2x = 92-16
2x=76
x = 38

the number of boys is 38
the number of girls is 54

check:
do they add up to 92 ? YES
are there 16 more girls than boys ? YES
